Encouraging Performers

September 14, 2008

Two players at opposite ends of the injury spectrum each had positive moments in the blowout win over Delbarton.

The first was junior defensive tackle Robert Welsh. He repreatedly pressured the quarterback until leaving the game midway through the third quarter with a right ankle sprain. Welsh, a 6-3, 246-pounder from Bay Shore, wears the same No. 94 jersey that Rutgers freshman made Scott Vallone famous. He hopes to play this week against Holy Trinity.

Another highlight was senior running back Chris Carberry. He scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter, an encouraging sight for Friars fans. Carberry opened 2007 as the main back. Then he injured his wrist Week 2 before missing the rest of the season with a right knee injury Week 4 against Farrell. The road to recovery wasn’t easy. And the Friars’ depth in the backfield means Carberry is no longer the featured back, but one of many. But at least he’s contributing once again.
