BY JASON MOLINET

No sooner had St. Anthony’s athletic director Don Buckley handed out the MVP plaque to junior Caitlin Connelly, she turned and walked toward the bench and fell into the arms of coach Donna Newman. Coach and player shared a long embrace as the fans around the St. Dominic gym went wild.

No one was bigger than Connelly as top-seeded St. Anthony’s earned a 25-15, 25-23, 25-13 win over No. 2 Holy Trinity to capture the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA championship in girls volleyball on Tuesday night. Connelly was a force serving, hitting and on defense. She led the way with 15 kills.

“She is her own worst critic,’’ Newman said. “She wants to be 10 times better. She’s a real leader and a complete player.’’

St. Anthony’s (15-1) advances to the eight-team state CHSAA Class AA girls volleyball tournament at St. Mary’s in upstate Lancaster. Day 1 is pool play. The top two finishers in each bracket advance to Sunday’s semifinals.

Holy Trinity (13-3), the only team to beat the Friars this season, will be in Buffalo as well. The Titans are in the opposite pool, so the teams could meet again in the semifinals or title match on Sunday.

“I would like a chance to see them again,’’ Newman said. The teams met in the 2005 state final.

Everyone was preparing for a war in the league final. When the teams met on Oct. 16, the Titans earned a hard-fought victory in five games. It was the match of the year in the Catholic league.

Not so the third time. The Friars, playing in the final for the sixth straight season, jumped in front 13-6 in the first game and cruised to a 25-15 victory.

But the war was won in the second game. Holy Trinity pressed the Friars throughout. St. Anthony’s saw its lead cut to 22-22 with a block by the Titans’ taller front line. At that point, the entire tenor of the night teetered on the outcome.

The Friars closed out strong. Connelly’s kill made it 24-22. And with Mariel Metailos serving, Holy Trinity returned a long volley for the final point.

The third game was all St. Anthony’s. The Friars roared in front 9-3 and never looked back. As Connelly spiked the ball off a Holy Trinity rival and the ball bounced away for the final point of the match, the crowd on hand rushed the floor.

“This is incredible,’’ said Connelly, who was named tournament MVP on top of being named league MVP.

Metalios, one of three sophomores in the lineup, finished with 49 assists. Caroline Scalamandre had 12 kills. Megan Fitzpatrick recorded 8 kills. And Michele Impellizeri added 10 blocks and 8 kills.

The Friars have won 15 of 17 games since falling to Holy Trinity 19 days ago. Most importantly, St. Anthony’s won its sixth league title since 1991 and second in three years.

Top-seeded St. Anthony’s shook off a slow start to blow past No. 4 Kellenberg, 20-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-12, in a Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA semifinal in girls volleyball on Sunday at St. Dominic. The Friars (14-1) will face Holy Trinity in the final at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Dominic.

This is the sixth straight trip to the final for St. Anthony’s, gunning for its second title in four seasons. Only this group is far different from years’ past. According to coach Donna Newman. She starts three sophomores. And each was a factor on Sunday.

Sophomore setter Mariel Metalios led the way against Kellenberg with 48 assists. Fellow sophomore Kerrin Maurer recorded 25 digs.

“We’re a young team,’’ Newman said. “We don’t give up.’’

The veterans weren’t bad either. Senior outside hitter Caroline Scalamandre came up with 15 big kills. Juniors Caitlin Connelly (12 kills) and Olivia Abbate (10 kills) were just as effective up front.

A date with the Titans looms next. The teams split during the regular season. Win or lose, the Friars advance to the eight-team state CHSAA Class AA tournament at St. Mary’s in upstate Lancaster on Nov. 8-9.

No. 1 St. Anthony’s beat No. 2 Chaminade, 3-2, in two overtimes to capture the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA boys soccer championship Saturday night at Adelphi. Orlando Castanada scored twice and Alex Naples made 10 saves.

The Friars move on to the state CHSAA semifinals on Nov. 7. They will face the Buffalo CHSAA champ (either Nichols or St. Francis) at 7:30 p.m. at Adelphi.

11-1-08 NSCHSAA Final: Sacred Heart 2-1 L

The Friars saw their season end on Saturday.
The Friars saw their season end on Saturday.

After a scoreless first half, second-seeded Sacred Heart erupted for two goals to outlast No. 1 St. Anthony’s, 2-1, in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA girls soccer final Saturday at Adelphi. The Friars (14-5-2) lost in the final one year after winning the state CHSAA title.

Sacred Heart opened scoring off a corner kick. The Friars responded just nine minutes into the second half off a goal by the Jennifer Meier.

The Trojans struck for a 2-1 lead with 27 minutes left. There was plenty of time for the Friars to regroup, and opportunities were there, according to coach Dave Prutting. St. Anthony’s — which played Sacred Heart to a 2-2 tie and a 4-0 win during the regular season — simply couldn’t convert in the final.

“It’s a good season,” Prutting said. “I think we had the talent to have a great season. We came out flat in the final and couldn’t get on track.”

This is Sacred Heart’s second title in three seasons, both at the expense of St. Anthony’s.

After a quiet but cold first half, No. 1 St. Anthony’s heated up. The result was a 4-0 win over No. 4 St. Francis Prep in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA girls soccer semifinal on Wednesday night at Cy Donnelly Field in South Huntington.

Junior striker Rachel Nuzzelese, back from a hamstring injury, helped her teams shake off a 12-day layoff with three second-half goals and an assist. Senior Jennifer Meier, who scored three times in the regular season finale, came back with a goal and assist against St. Francis Prep.

Nuzzelese battled through the St. Francis Prep defense and five midfielders to score on a through ball from Kerri Shannon two minutes into the second half to make it 1-0. She struck again in the 51st minute and the rout was on.

Senior goalkeeper Shannon Cosgrove made three saves to record the shutout.

The Friars (14-4-2), in the league final for the 19th time in the last 21 years, will play for the title at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Adelphi.
